The 2nd Workshop on the Institutional Strengthening of the IORA Secretariat was held today, 11 April 2019 in Mauritius. The Workshop reviewed the progress on the recommendation of the 1st Workshop on Institutional Strengthening (held in March 2018) and proposed several concrete steps for further capacitating the IORA Secretariat in its operations and functions.
H.E. Ambassador Dr Nomvuyo N. Nokwe, Secretary General of IORA, highlighted that the Secretariat is staffed with dedicated and professional officials. However, with the ever-increasing sphere of IORA activities, the support of Member States in increasing staff strength and enhancing financial capacity is of utmost importance.
As an Association promoting and working towards sustainable growth and balanced development of the Indian Ocean region, IORA is cognizant of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to enable smooth implementation of IORA programmes.
Following on the discussions at the successful 1st IORA Strategic Planning Workshop (held on 9 – 10 April 2019), this event provided an opportune platform for Member States to engage in practical terms with the IORA Secretariat and their expectations on its role.
Representatives from IORA Member State capitals as well as local missions were present to analyse the structure and operations of the Secretariat and pool in ideas to guide and support the effective functioning of the Secretariat in order to deliver on its core mandate.
