IORA Managing Coastal Disasters Awareness Day

30 July 2021: On Friday, 30 July 2021, the IORA Secretariat Team along with colleagues from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of the Republic of Mauritius and the Indian Ocean Commission went on an expedition to Île aux Aigrettes, which is an islet off the south-east coast of Mauritius.

This awareness day was held on the occasion of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems and reflecting on the impacts by the 2020 Wakashio Disaster. The day included a visit to the Île aux Aigrettes by the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, and a presentation by the Reef Conservation Mauritius. Participants were able to learn more about Mangrove restoration and protection, as well as the expected impacts of the Wakashio Disaster which occurred on 25 July 2020. The IORA Secretariat along with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) hosted this awareness day as part of the ongoing IORA-Germany partnership to strengthen the area of Disaster Risk Management and the IORA Secretariat.
