The ‘Professional Short Course on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation - Indian Ocean Region’ (16 September – 23 October 2025) has been successfully delivered virtually by the Australian National University (ANU) for IORA Member States. This sixth edition of the course of 8 weeks was funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. IORA Member States, namely Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Yemen, participated in the course.
Forty-three selected professionals from Government, Civil society, or industry, working in climate change adaptation and mitigation, participated in the course. The course enabled the participants to have a deeper understanding of climate change adaptation and mitigation. Topics covered included climate change impacts and vulnerability, policy and development, legal frameworks, governance, sectoral contexts and socio-economic issues.
Participants acquired knowledge to assist evidence-based policy design and reform, enhanced interpretation and analysis skills, and explored a variety of socio-economic impacts and policy interventions to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. This course is aligned with IORA’s commitment to addressing climate change, following the adoption of its Climate Change Strategic Agenda in May 2025.
The Agenda aims to deliver impactful regional cooperation between IORA Member States and its partners by leveraging IORA’s strengths to implement well-targeted and coordinated activities to address climate change. The ‘Professional Short Course on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation - Indian Ocean Region’ is building capacity and knowledge of IORA Member States to address climate change impacts.
