In view of implementing the IORA Strategic Framework of Actions on Marine Debris (Pillars I: Policy and Framework; II: Measures and Actions; V: Regional Cooperation) the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), in collaboration with the expert Mr Joachim Stretz from the Resources & Waste Advisory Group and with support from the Global Program Marine Litter Prevention by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, organised a 2-day webinar on the topic: Tackling Marine Litter: An Introduction to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This event brought together representatives from IORA Member States and other relevant stakeholders from the private and public sector to explore the key steps for establishing EPR Systems.

The objective of the webinar was to introduce the participants to the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility and create a platform to share important experiences in the field of circular economy. The participants were provided with a comprehensive understanding of the concept, necessary resources and future needs for an effective implementation of EPR Systems.

The webinar included inputs from Mr Patarapol Tularak, Founder and Director, Circular Sustainable Solutions Co, Ltd, and Ms Stacey Webb, Head of Marine and Coastal Impact Programmes Sustainable Seas Trust, who shared their experiences with EPR in their countries, Thailand and South Africa, and provided valuable perspectives on the practical aspects of setting up and implementing EPR.

Additionally, the event featured interactive sessions where all participants could discuss their future needs, facilitating the development of priorities for next steps and measures.

Sincere appreciation is extended to all participants for their valuable contributions, with anticipation for continued collaborative efforts to tackle marine litter through effective EPR systems.
