The Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa in collaboration with the IORA Secretariat, is shortly to host the second IORA Familiarisation Visit for Media Practitioners and Journalists from IORA Member States.

South Africa is the current Chair of the IORA for the period October 2017 – 2019. For the duration of their Chairship, the theme of, “Uniting the Peoples of Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Middle East through Enhanced Cooperation for Peace, Stability and Sustainable Development” was adopted. This was based on the view that the Indian Ocean region should be characterised as a region of peace, stability and development within which to pursue the goal of promoting cooperation for the well-being and development of the countries and peoples of the Indian Ocean region.

As an Association promoting sustained growth and balanced development, there is a need to create a communication linkage for media practitioners and journalists for the visibility of IORA. To this end, the first Familiarization Visit was held in India from 12 – 17 November 2017.

The forthcoming second Familiarization Visit aims to bring together delegates sharing media experiences from various backgrounds, creating a unique platform to unite media practitioners and journalists from IORA Member States. Delegates will have an opportunity to interact with various media houses, think tanks, civil society, industry, and youth across various locations in South Africa.

Objectives of this Media Visit:

  • Provide a platform for IORA Member States to create a media network for furthering the visibility of the Association;
  • Encourage cooperation and dialogue between media personnel and journalists;
  • Strengthen IORA linkages with media experts; and
  • Provide capacity building to media practitioners and journalists on regional cooperation.
